Heritage Deli @ Brixton Village

This will be a short post, as very little needs to be said to persuade people to go to Heritage Deli (Recently renamed THE JOINT) - which is back at Brixton Village, Unit 87.

Their Pulled Pork and BBQ Chicken rolls are hands down the best in town. But make sure you get down their early to grab yourself one as a large proportion of those visiting the south east market will have the same idea as you. The succulent meat is melts in your mouth and has just the right amount of sauce/spice (depending which you go for). My only criticism is there is sometimes a bit too much coleslaw which makes eating a little messier but also takes away some of the fantastic flavours away from the main star of the show.

The unit is also on a row of the market which is slightly less busy and allows for you to sit comfortably and not shout over each other as you do at some of the larger, more restaurant-esq stalls/restaurants. They also serve their water in THE CUTEST jars.

Not that I am encouraging over excessive alcohol consumption BUT if you did find your self suffering the next day from doing so, Heritage Deli is guaranteed to sort you out - that is unless you are prone to the meat sweats.

Meat Liquor

So here is the promised return of MBFK. I promise I won't leave it as long again; life seemed to just take over. That does not mean however I haven't wined and dined myself in some fantastic places in the meantime.

Now it seems appropriate to return with a blog post about one of my guiltiest pleasures ever - Meat Liquor. This was my second visit to the haven of dirty cocktails (I still talk about the Cideritas from my last visit) and greasy meat and as rightly stated by one of my girlfriends, its a place you can only really go to once a year so you have enough time to work off the increased levels of saturated fat you consume before the next visit.

Having been open to about a year now, we had expected queues to have reduced significantly since our last visit at which we endured a 2.5 hour wait. However whether it be returning or new customers, our hour wait is a true testament to the funky diner and the fun that is waiting inside for you. You are however now rewarded for you patience and are served onions rings and fried pickles, two of the tastiest options on the menu.

The dark, graffitied, dungeon like space you finally enter into, immediately invites you in to overindulge on drinks and food. To our disappointment though, Cideritas are no longer on the menu, and so we consoled ourselves the only way we knew how- by ordering 3 tankards of GROG (limited to 2 per person on ML's advice).

After a 10min wait at the bar, we sat down at our table and immediately reeled off our meaty desires.
1 x Chilli Cheese fries,
1 x Slaw,
1 x Buffalo Wings,
1 x Deep Fried pickles,
2 x Cheeseburger,
1 x Mushroom Swiss.

Now how could we ever be disappointed with what turned up. Answer: We couldn't. My mouth still waters looking at this picture. We couldn't eat quick enough and our tray - YES TRAY - of food disappeared in minutes. The champion of the meal being the deep friend pickles and blue cheese dip (as per last time) however the burgers never fail to disappoint and they disappear so quickly the I think they must evaporate in your mouth.

The sheer demand in this place never ends and even at 9.30pm we were asked to move (in lieu of a free drink) to accommodate a larger group who had just arrived. Therefore leading up to finish our evening, rebelling against the recommended dose, with 2 more rounds of Grog.

Do not let the idea of large queues put you off, it is well and truly worth it and with more branches opening up across the capital; Meat Market (Covent Garden) and Meat Wagon (Hoxton Square - Set to open any day now); more of you can get drunk on their meaty goodness.

Evans & Peel, Detective Agency

Amongst the throng of speakeasy's that have opened across London over the last couple of years, Evans & Peel's Detective Agency easily tops them all.

After wandering around Earls Court Road in search of the unassuming door, we eventually found the entrance. Disappointingly we bumped into people leaving as we buzzed in and so did not get to speak to our 'detective' prior to entering. As we arrived into his office, we were instantly quite confused. Unlike many other 'speakeasys' in London, Evans and Peel had gone all out and we found our selves transported back in time to a 1920's office, with no obvious entrance to the bar, and quite abruptly asked if we had an appointment by the dapperly dressed Detective behind the desk.

After confirming our appointment, he asked us how he could help? After my other half began to ask if we could have a drink and I saw the look of disapproval spread across our Detective's face, I threw myself into a story about my missing brother, surprising myself as much as my date. With the final question, 'Does he have an distinguishing features?', he thought it best to seek help from his colleagues and with the pull of a book on the shelf beside him, a bookcase then swung open into a buzzing, lowly lit prohibition bar.

Noted at the bottom of the menu, The Detective Agency cannot serve alcohol without food and so although having filled ourselves earlier that evening we had to be served a small plate of bread and oil. The decor was a delicate mix of antiques and modern inserts, with dirty, cracked porcelain tiles behind the bar and furniture perfectly sought. We sat opposite other on a 1920's wooden desk and browsed their fairly extensive cocktail menu. The cocktails are all slight twists on old classics, and to die for.

We only stayed for an hour, as it got fairly packed and sitting by the door slightly ruined the atmosphere for us. I would however wouldn't think twice to go back (we have already booked to go again) and would highly recommend it to anyone, especially those who want to immerse themselves into the theme.

Cocktails: Approx £9.50 Each

P.S If you wanted to go a step further, you could also join as a member who are given the opportunity to purchase one of the think wooden spirit drawers (£300 a year) behind the bar, in which you can choose a bottle of spirit to be decanted into an Evans & Peel bottle, wax dipped and sealed. Then return time and time again with your key to use your chosen spirit in measures and cocktails as you please.

Bonnie Gull New Venture

Following the success of Bonnie-on- Sky and previous London Pop Up's, Bonnie Gull's new pursuit is  finally a permanent resturant of their own. After a very cagey conversation with Co-Founder and Director Alex at Platterform's Bonnie-On-Sky, about their new location, it seems all paperwork has been confirmed and they will be finally settling on Foley Street, Fitzrovia.

A seaside restaurant on in the city, with full focus on 100% British produce. Head Chef Luke Robinson, formerly of Jamie Oliver's Fifteen will have a daily changing menu to coincide with that days catch. Dishes such as Scottish Langoustine, pickled apple, roasted pork belly and endive salad will tickle our taste buds to start with and could be followed by Fresh Razor and Surf Clam Linguini or Whole Devon Crab with Shack Mayo. A careful constructed menu that will make this new venture one of the hottest seats in town.

Reservations for the main restaurant are already being taken and will be from October.

South Place Hotel

South Place Hotel, opens 3rd September and is the next venture from D&D London. With the
mantra of more 'Meet than sleep', it is therefore no surprise that alongside the 80 rooms, South Place will be opening the Angler Restaurant and Bar on the seventh floor with unrivalled views of London (bar Sushisamba and Duck and Waffle). As its title suggests, Angler has full focus on native fish, shell fish and crustacea. Seating 80, opening for lunch 12pm - 3pm and a later dinner sitting 6pm - 10.30pm.

Further to this restaurant come viewing platform, the ground floor at South Place will open a more casual Shoreditch style restaurant - 3 South Place. As more of a british diner, they will be following in the recent trend of glamorising well known comfort food. Seating 70 and open nearly 24/7, 6.30am - 2am.

Finally to compliment both of these diners, South Place will have a lower ground floor bar with resident DJ and more casual bar menu and upper terrace with outdoor grill and extensive cocktail menu.

The long awaited adaptation of On The Road by Jack Kerouac will be hitting our screens in October after its hugely succesful premier at Somerset House last week.

Edinburgh - In a nutshell

Firstly I must apologise for the lack of activity from Kate. It is now nearing the end of the Edinburgh Festival which means that she can finally get back to her normal eating habits. However it would be very deceitful to say that she did not enjoy her fair share of fantastic eateries whilst up there.

I therefore thought I would share a few of these incase any of you are to visit and are stuck about where to dine:

Mum's
A good old fashioned comfort food joint that replacement Monster Mash on Forest Road. Fairly priced,  down to earth perfect for Brunch.

The Outsider
Is possibly my favourite restaurant in Edinburgh; They do the most delicious scallops. The outsider caters for all, serving small delicate dishes on their A la Carte to larger salad and skewer dishes.
P.s their lunch time deals/menu is fantastic.

Oloroso
Is a treat. Wine is delectable and food is without fault. Lastly with one of the most spectacular views on the castle from its outdoor terrace, this has to be top of your list.

Bonzai
This was the first place I tried sushi 8 years ago and will always have a place in my heart. Their Unagi Nigiri is amazing and is always a must have when I am in the city.

The Dome
Now the main restaurant at The Dome is standard when visiting the scottish capital, however when coming in the main entrance, there is a purple curtain on the left hand side behind which is a smaller, more intimate, lowly lit version of the main dining hall, which I would more highly recommend.

Bar Napoli
With friendly (sometimes overly) staff and cheap and chearful food, for 24 hours dining (only during Edinburgh festival), this is the place to go.

The Kitchin
Now I actually didn't get to go to Tom Kitchin's  on this trip however I heard great things and if you are so lucky to get a reservation and this Michelin Star restaurant, don't turn it down.

London Picnic Club, Platterform

London Picnic Club is the next Pop- Up from Platterform in their new semi permanent space on the top of Magdalen House, Tooley Street.

Since Bonnie - On -Sky, Platterform has completely overhauled the interior of their space, in two days, into a charming picnic garden, fully equipped with Hoopla, giant Jenga and a small movie screen.

For the £32.50, paid upfront online, you are treated to a cocktail on arrival alongside your three courses and tapas. We all went for the shrubs cocktail, which was slightly too bitter for my liking but it definitely captured the atmosphere and theme of the night. Seated at a low table with cushions to the side of the restaurant, and more importantly next to the bar, we had the best seats in the house with the most amazing view of the sunsetting behind the Shard.

With Prosecco flowing (reasonably priced at £29 a bottle) our cheese, meats and pickles arrived. They were delicious and the only fault would be there just was not enough of them, however we didn't have to wait long for our next course. The Prawn Ceviche with popcorn was to die for, and the slight tartness of lime was perfectly complimented by the Cucumber, melon and endive salad. We then split the mains between us with 3 x Squid and Chilli sauce and 2 x Chicken Stir Fry , however we may have got this wrong. Personally preferred the Chicken stir fry, with the creamy coconut rum and angostura bitters served with both crunchy and soft Yam fritters;  and could have cleaned the plate by myself very easily. In all honestly I felt the squid rice, puffed and fried calamari with dill and chill sauce was fairly nondescript and despite filling us, could not compare.

On top of our £32.50 a head, we only spent another £15 each on drinks, which for the amount we drank could not be faltered. Food was nothing short of delicious and we left on a real high, feeling incredibly satisfied and slightly smug that not everyone knew of this place yet. However this is all set to change I imagine. London Picnic Club was only meant to stick around for 3 weeks before an Indonesian BBQ took its place however with the success of this menu they have decided to keep it running for as long as they see fit, with new dishes being added on a weekly basis.

Ritas Dining

Ritas Dining is a new pop up on Stoke Newington Road from the owner of Brunswick House Cafe, Jackson Boxer. Originally meant to be a fried chicken shop, they chose to widen their scope, and the menu that evolved is much more varied. There doesn't seem to be an underlying theme to the menu; from Patty Melts to Fried Chicken Rolls and Ox Heart Taco's; and although the menu seems slightly greasy, what arrives is heavenly.

On a Friday night the whole place was rammed, we arrived about 8.30pm and there was little chance we would get a table and so we settled in on stools at the bar, right in the middle of the action.

We started with Hibiscus Margarita and a Dark and Stormy which kicked off the evening nicely, followed by rounds of Desperadoes. Dishes are smaller than expected but all as sounding as delicious as the next. We decided to split 4 between us, starting with the Patty Melt and Soy and Ginger Chicken Wings served with pickle and watermelon. I could have easily eaten another Patty Melt  and its moorish caramelised onion jam on my own and it was a struggle not to order myself one and gorge myself in secret. The plump Soy and Ginger wings were delightfully sticky and not too fatty. As per our visit to Elliot's, I'm not normally a fan but have been proved wrong twice now.

We let that settle before debating our next course of action. Due to the unadventurous nature of my other half, we weren't allowed to order the Duck heart baked beans or Ox-Heart Taco. Instead we went for the fried chicken sandwich and green chilli Mac n Cheese. I think we may have peaked, with our first two dishes and so although they were both delicious, they didn't quite live up to our expectation. Which by this point were sky high.

The Clientele is quit trendy however don't let this put you off. Staff were are lovely although frantic -  with the waitress unnecessarily trying to sneak me a small portion of beans on the side, before being shouted at by the chef, food was great and although fairly loud, the atmosphere was electric. This place is still a (slightly) hidden gem so I would suggest to get yourself there sharp-ish.

Open for dinner from 7pm, Tuesday to Saturday.

Brooklyn Bite

Talk about judging a book by it's cover, the slightly stark modern interior of Brooklyn Bite didn't seem to have much of an atmosphere and made me worry we had over-antipicated our visit. However the food wine and company (their staff - one in particular) more than made up for it.

We had arrived late at 9.30pm and we were soon the only ones in the restaurant so had their undivided attention. The choice's of toppings were too much to take in and so we asked our waiter to decide and order for us. We were not let down.

What then appeared on our table was what can only be described as, as a beast. It was huge and I would probably not go for an 18" again however it was delicious, the base was not too thick and crust was soft and easy to eat; so easy that we devoured it in less than 25mins. All washed down with a (slightly over priced) bottle of wine, quirkily served in water glasses.

We left at closing time, feeling very full and slightly drunk; Despite the lack of customers, Brooklyn Bite certainly made an good impression, in more ways than one.

Elliot's Cafe

We booked for Elliot's Cafe quite late in the day (4 days before) and so had to settle for a 9pm sitting. We tried to get in a little earlier at 8.30pm however it was so rammed there was no chance. This is a true testament to the great atmosphere and food Elliot's serves up.

Elliot's Cafe works directly with Borough Market, opposite and their menu is a direct correlation to what is in season and popular at that time. No two visits are therefore the same.

Our waiter was friendly and funny and judged our mood just right; He helped us along the way however we needed very little encouragement to order ourselves a bottle. Wine by the bottle was quite expensive and so we settled for a cheeky bottle of Prosecco (it was a birthday after all) which was comparable in price.

The rustic interior of the restaurant was reflected in their food; We decided to share two starters, the sliced pipers with garlic butter and the deep fried chicken wings. Both were delicious and not too filling. I am not normally a 'eat off the bone' kind of girl however my attitude changed at approximately 9.27pm Thursday 12th July when our chicken wings arrived.

We then uncharacteristically decided to both go for the Lambs Belly and Roasted Tomatoes, as it sounded too good to share with another dish. It melted in your mouth and the mixed ripened roasted tomatoes were the perfect compliment.

The criteria for the evening was fun, relaxed, great food and wine. Every one of these boxes was ticked.

Bonnie On Sky - Seafood Shack

Platterform has taken up residency at the Skyroom from 5th July, for the rest of 2012. The first venture to appear there is a collaboration with seafood restauranteur Bonnie Gull, Bonnie On Sky.

Situated on a roof top with deck chair lounge, amusement pier balcony and bar, this exciting new pop up, will serve up exquisite seafood combinations and cocktails, for £33 a head for a three course meal and cocktail on arrival. Dishes include Queen Scallops panfried with yorkshire chorizo and burnt lemon dressing and Crispy BBQ mackerel with gooseberries and vegetable slaw. All of which make my mouth water already.

Reservations are for 1.5hours each however little encouragement will be needed to stay after and sample a couple (if not all) the cocktails on their menu.

You must be quick with booking (link below), I have sadly missed out on taking the other half for his birthday as I was just too slow with the uptake. I have to say, I haven't been this excited about a pop up for a VERY long time.

They will serve only one dish - Steak and Salad. There will be only 1 cut of meat too, the shoulder. Charlie Carroll, Operations Advisor Of Wahaca, insists that this cut of meat is not widely used enough and the restaurant wil endeavour to provide affordable, delicious steak to all(if you can get a table).

La Bodega Negra

La Bodega Negra has been talked about continuously since is opening and so it was about time I got myself together and booked a table. From the moment you walk through the 'sex shop' entrance you feel like your in for a treat and that is exactly what you get.

The dark, mysterious basement restaurant doesn't lend itself to big groups and it is hard to have a conversation without shouting at each other over the table however with our waitress's infectious enthusiasm for the menu this was quickly forgotten.

In a group of 4, we decided to share one large main and 4/5 smaller dishes and sides. The Pork Belly (main), served with white beans and salsa verde melted in our mouths and was complemented well with our side of Potatoes and Mole Negro (a favourite among my friends). Note that it is far too large for one person to eat to themselves and I can guarantee food envy would have set in as soon as other peoples dishes arrive. The Prawn Jicama and Chorizo and Roast Squash Taco's came next, which when ordering make sure you decide on more than 1 each as we did, they will devoured in one, very large, mouthful which is just not enough.

Then came the Salmon Ceviche which felt, didn't contribute too to our meal however my companions strongly disagreed. This may have been however because my attention had been turn to the two unexpected triumphs of the evening that had just arrived on our table; The grilled corn coated with chipotle sauce and cheese, and the Guadalajara salad with caramelised pecans, pines nuts and pomegranate seeds. These two dishes would compliment any combination of choices from the menu and simultaneously cool (the salad) and spice up (the corn) your taste buds.

With never ending rounds of delicious Hibiscus Margaritas coming to our table, maybe Tuesday night wasn't the night to go; however you are guaranteed fantastic food and an electric atmosphere any night of the week. There is no question as to why La Bodega Negra has become so popular.

The huge space will also feature a Bar American,  Live Music and Cabaret Space (The Crazy Coqs), Wine Bar and the ZL Cafe.

Soft Launch: Friday 22nd June until Sunday 24th June
25% off menu prices
Please note: Friday dinner reservations have already closed

The Old Red Cow

When my parents visit I always try to take them somewhere new to eat or drink. Fathers day was no exception. I booked us a table at The Old Red Cow, it ticked every (there were only two) box -it had to have large selection of beers and serve a mean roast. Set next to Smithfield market, the quiet unassuming pub didn't disappoint.

We shared a smoked salmon with Horseradish starter and ham hock terrine which were glorious; we could have all eaten them alone and had seconds. We then all went for the beef roast, served with roast spuds, green beans and bacon, Yorkshire pudding and the most exceptional cauliflower cheese that could have been served as its own dish. The meat was slightly bloody and melted in your mouth, my only criticism was that the spuds were slightly dry.

Throughout the meal, we made our way through the extensive beer list, which alone is worth a visit, helped along by the very knowledgable staff.

After settling our very reasonable bill and we walked off our food around Smithfield and its beautiful surroundings.

The food and drink could be without fault, staff were incredibly helpful, and atmosphere relaxed. They just need to work out how to open the windows on the second floor.
